LAUS 06commissioner: Jurat Laus 06In the time of transversality, the awards really willing to have an impact have to question, reflect on them and open new territories. They have to bear in mind the concerns related to their social and professional contexts, to promote discussion and to consider new directions. And they do also have to go beyond their traditional roles of granting recognition, crediting and dissemination. They neeed to be intuitive and dynamic eough so as to offer a focus b ased on action and proposals. Exactly, that is why thety must become a transformation tool; they need to be alive. Design and graphic communitacion awards must express - and at the same time put across - the great and growing impact these prossional practices have on the whole of society. They have to reflect, for instance, the transformation process its very working procedures have undergone, the connections linking differnt fields, the increasing influences, and the creation of collective images and identities - a particularly burning issue in our cities nowadays since new tourist behaviours have focused on them. The Laus Awards can be considered to be a useful model of this broad and open concept of what awards should be. They grant excellecne recognition, but they do also go further: they are a support tool for the development of the deseign sector as well as for the laying down of productive links with other cultural spheres.
